Fortuna Mining pays $200m for Barrick and IAMGOLD's Senegal gold ground
The Bambadji purchase gives Fortuna 60km of contiguous exploration ground next to its existing Diamba Sud project
Fortuna Mining signed definitive agreements dated 10 August 2026 to acquire the 190 square kilometre Bambadji gold exploration project in Senegal from subsidiaries of Barrick Mining and IAMGOLD, paying $200m in cash split between $130.35m to Barrick and $69.65m to IAMGOLD. The purchase gives the Canadian miner control of roughly 60km of contiguous, potentially gold-bearing ground, since Bambadji directly borders Fortuna's own Diamba Sud exploration project in the same district.
Consolidating a district rather than chasing a single deposit
Rather than bidding for a single orebody, Fortuna's move reflects a district-consolidation strategy increasingly common in West African gold exploration, where juniors and mid-tier producers assemble large, contiguous land packages to capture the full potential of a mineralised trend rather than owning an isolated deposit surrounded by other companies' ground. For Barrick and IAMGOLD, both of which have been paring back non-core exploration assets as part of broader portfolio discipline, selling Bambadji converts an early-stage property into cash without requiring either company to fund further exploration themselves.
What happens next
Fortuna said it planned to spend $8m exploring Bambadji through the end of 2026, including roughly 51,000 metres of reverse circulation and diamond drilling, with drilling due to begin in the third quarter. The pace and scale of that programme will determine whether Bambadji develops into a standalone discovery or is ultimately folded into a combined development plan alongside Diamba Sud.
Why it matters
The deal adds Senegal to the list of West African gold jurisdictions, alongside Mali, Burkina Faso, Côte d'Ivoire and Guinea, seeing renewed exploration investment as gold prices near record highs make even early-stage ground economically attractive to acquire. For Fortuna, already operating the Séguéla mine in neighbouring Côte d'Ivoire, the purchase extends its West African exploration pipeline at a moment when the company has been simultaneously exiting more mature, higher-risk assets such as its former Yaramoko mine in Burkina Faso.
Should exploration at Bambadji confirm continuity with the mineralisation already identified at Diamba Sud, Fortuna could be positioned to advance a combined development study covering both properties, a scenario that would materially increase the scale of the company's Senegalese gold ambitions beyond what either project could support individually.
