Montage Gold buys African Gold for $170m, adding Didievi to Cote d'Ivoire pipeline
The deal, completed in April 2026, hands the Koné project's developer a second Ivorian gold project and sets up a follow-on Macquarie loan
Montage Gold, the Toronto-listed developer building the Koné gold mine in Côte d'Ivoire, completed a $170m acquisition of African Gold in April 2026, bringing the Didievi project into its portfolio as a second Ivorian development asset. The deal extended a run of dealmaking by Montage, which had already lined up an $825m financing package from Wheaton Precious Metals and Zijin Mining to build Koné, combining a gold stream, subordinated stream and secured loan facilities from the two partners.
Building out a second project
With Didievi added to its pipeline, Montage moved quickly to advance it: in August 2026 the company disclosed a binding agreement to buy out minority shareholders in the project for $57.7m, lifting its interest to 95.5%, alongside a $75m loan facility from Macquarie Bank to fund further exploration and fast-track development work. Montage has framed Didievi as a natural follow-on to Koné, using the same regional infrastructure, workforce and permitting relationships the company has built in Côte d'Ivoire since it began construction on its flagship project.
Koné still the main event
Koné itself remained on budget and on schedule through 2025 and into 2026, with first gold pour targeted for the second quarter of 2027 and average annual production above 300,000 ounces expected over its first eight years, according to the company's 2024 feasibility study. Construction hours passed nine million by the end of 2025, and Montage has continued to report steady progress in its quarterly updates.
Why it matters for Côte d'Ivoire
The Didievi acquisition and its financing show how a single large gold discovery can seed a broader mining district, with international capital, from Canadian equity markets to Chinese and North American streaming and lending houses, following the first project into a country. For Côte d'Ivoire, already home to Endeavour Mining's operations, the build-out gives the government a second major new gold complex to add to its growing export base as it looks to diversify state revenue beyond cocoa.
How quickly Montage can replicate Koné's financing playbook, drawing on streaming and lending partners familiar with the company from its flagship project, at Didievi will determine whether the smaller asset becomes a genuine second production centre or remains a longer-dated resource awaiting its own dedicated feasibility study.
