Robex Resources beats Perseus Mining to Predictive Discovery in $1.5bn Guinea gold tie-up
A three-way contest over neighbouring Bankan and Kiniero gold projects ends with Robex's matched offer and a combined 400,000oz-a-year producer

Predictive Discovery and Robex Resources agreed on 6 October 2025 to merge in a transaction valuing the combined group at about A$2.35bn (roughly $1.5bn), bringing together two of the largest and lowest-cost gold projects in Guinea. The deal unites Predictive's Bankan project with Robex's neighbouring Kiniero mine, sites just 30km apart, into a single company expected to produce more than 400,000 ounces of gold a year by 2029 from a combined resource base of 9.5 million ounces.
A rival bid intrudes
The merger did not go uncontested. Perseus Mining, the ASX-listed operator of several West African gold mines, delivered what it called a superior, binding offer for the 82.2% of Predictive Discovery it did not already own on 3 December 2025, offering 0.1360 new Perseus shares for every Predictive share. Under the terms of its existing agreement with Robex, Predictive gave Robex the chance to match the improved terms. Robex did so, and Predictive's board determined the revised Robex agreement matched Perseus's proposal under the pre-existing arrangement, leading Perseus to formally end its bid on 11 December 2025.
Completion
With Perseus out of the picture, Predictive Discovery and Robex completed their merger in April 2026, under terms that gave Robex shareholders 49% of the combined entity and Predictive's own shareholders the remaining 51%. The new group becomes one of the largest gold producers focused specifically on Guinea, a country that has drawn growing mining investment alongside its long-established bauxite industry.
Why the contest mattered
The bidding war highlights how competitive the market for advanced West African gold development assets has become as bullion prices have climbed to record levels, with rival gold producers now willing to launch unsolicited offers to disrupt agreed mergers rather than simply build new mines from scratch. For Perseus, the setback means revisiting its own growth and capital allocation plans, while for Guinea, the enlarged Robex-Predictive company represents a substantial new source of gold export revenue and employment.
Guinea's government, which has spent years courting large-scale gold investment to diversify an economy long dominated by bauxite, is likely to view the enlarged Robex-Predictive company as validation of that strategy, particularly if the combined group proceeds quickly toward the production growth both companies have outlined for the district.
