Arrow Minerals secures fresh three-year permit for Guinea's Niagara bauxite project

Guinea's Ministry of Mines and Geology issued a new three-year industrial exploration permit for Arrow Minerals' Niagara bauxite project on 15 July 2026, covering 499.61 square kilometres identical in area and boundaries to the company's previous licence. The permit was granted to Arrow's wholly owned local subsidiary, Mineralfields Bauxite SARLU, after a government review of the company's historical work and operational capacity, following roughly a year in which the project had been halted amid uncertainty over the permit's status.

Terms of the renewal

Under the new permit, Arrow must invest at least $1.51 million and begin spending within six months to resume active work, with two further two-year extensions available if needed. Niagara is an early-stage bauxite project with an estimated resource of 185 million tonnes grading an average of 42.3% alumina, and the company is assessing its potential as a direct shipping ore operation, which would allow bauxite to be exported with minimal processing.

Why it matters

Guinea is already one of the world's largest bauxite exporters, home to established operations such as the Compagnie des Bauxites de Guinée at Sangarédi and Kamsar, and the government has been working through a backlog of exploration and mining permits as it balances rapid growth in bauxite output with efforts to extract more value and tighter compliance from mining right holders. Arrow's experience, losing access to its project for roughly a year before securing a renewal, illustrates the regulatory risk smaller bauxite explorers face even in a jurisdiction as bauxite-rich as Guinea.

What happens next

With the permit back in place, Arrow's immediate task is meeting the minimum spending commitment and resuming drilling to test the direct shipping ore potential of the deposit. The company will need to demonstrate steady progress to avoid a repeat of the uncertainty that halted the project previously.
