Nel became Harmony's group chief executive on 1 January 2025, succeeding Peter Steenkamp. He joined Harmony in 2003, ran its South African operations from 2016 and became group chief operating officer in January 2023. A University of Pretoria mining engineer with an MBA from Chicago Booth, he has described the 2026 financial year, which included the first full contribution from Australia's CSA copper mine, as a defining step in Harmony's shift to a gold-and-copper producer.
