Orion Minerals lines up Glencore funding and R180m placement for SA copper restart
A $250m prepayment and offtake deal with the trading house underpins plans to bring the Prieska copper-zinc mine back into production
Orion Minerals, the ASX- and JSE-listed developer working to restart copper and zinc production in South Africa's Northern Cape, has structured a $250m prepayment and offtake agreement with commodity trader Glencore to underpin construction of its Prieska Copper-Zinc project, alongside a smaller, near-term equity placement to bridge the company through to that larger facility becoming unconditional. A placement supported by South African institutional investors, expected to close around 28 May 2026, raised roughly R180m, following an earlier capital raise in mid-2025 that also supported work at Prieska and the nearby Okiep Copper project.
Building a $412m mine
Prieska's redevelopment, reviving a mine that operated between 1971 and 1991 before closing, is expected to require about A$578m ($412m) of total construction capital. Under Orion's plan, development of what it calls the Prieska Uppers Mine would begin once the Glencore financing becomes unconditional, with first production targeted roughly 12 months after full financing is in place. The company has said it will pursue Prieska and Okiep in stages, using each project's cash flow and Glencore's offtake backing to reduce the amount of additional equity dilution needed along the way.
From explorer to producer
Orion has described 2026 as the year it aims to complete the transition from an exploration company to an operating copper and zinc producer, a milestone South African junior miners have found difficult to reach given the country's project financing constraints and lengthy permitting processes. Domestic institutional support for the interim placement, rather than reliance solely on international capital, points to renewed South African investor appetite for base-metal development stories as copper and zinc prices have strengthened.
Why it matters for the Northern Cape
A revived Prieska mine would add a new source of copper and zinc concentrate production to a province already home to Vedanta's Gamsberg zinc mine and Kumba's Sishen and Kolomela iron ore operations, diversifying the Northern Cape's mining base further. For Glencore, the prepayment and offtake structure secures a new supply line of concentrate without requiring direct mine ownership, a financing model increasingly common in funding mid-tier African base-metal restarts.
Should Prieska reach production on the timeline Orion has outlined, it would mark one of the few successful transitions from JSE- and ASX-listed exploration company to operating base-metals producer in South Africa in recent years, a distinction that has eluded several other well-capitalised juniors targeting the same province.
