Lindian Resources fires first blast as Kangankunde rare earths mining begins
The Malawi project moved from construction to active mining less than a year after final investment decision, with production still targeted for Q4 2026

Lindian Resources said on 2 July 2026 that it had completed the first production blast at its Kangankunde rare earths project in Malawi, marking the transition from construction to active mining. The maiden blast involved 206 drilled and charged holes and fragmented about 13,100 tonnes of material, including an estimated 5,500 tonnes of ore, which has since been hauled to a run-of-mine stockpile using the company's own Komatsu mining fleet.
A fast build
Lindian says it has moved from final investment decision to active mining in under 12 months, a rapid timeline for a rare earths project of this kind. Front-end commissioning of the process plant is targeted for October 2026, with practical completion expected by mid-November and first production still guided for the fourth quarter of 2026.
Why it matters
Kangankunde is widely regarded as the most operationally advanced rare earth project on the African continent, hosting a large monazite deposit rich in the neodymium and praseodymium used in permanent magnets for electric motors and wind turbines. A rapid, on-schedule build reduces the risk profile that has historically dogged rare earth developers, many of which have struggled to raise financing or clear environmental approvals. Malawi, a small economy with limited existing large-scale mining, stands to gain meaningfully from royalties and employment if Kangankunde ramps up as planned.
What happens next
With mining under way, the critical path now runs through process plant commissioning later in 2026. Because rare earth separation and processing circuits are technically demanding, the period between first ore extraction and consistent saleable concentrate output is typically where new projects face their sharpest execution test, and investors will be watching closely for confirmation that the Q4 2026 production target holds.
