Kodal Minerals banks $21.3m as Mali's Bougouni lithium mine ships maiden cargo
The first 28,950-tonne spodumene shipment to Hainan Mining validates the AIM-listed junior's Chinese-financed development of the project

Kodal Minerals, the AIM-listed developer of the Bougouni lithium project in southern Mali, said in December 2025 that it had received a $21.3m payment from offtake partner Hainan Mining, covering 95% of the invoiced value of the project's maiden export shipment. That first cargo, 28,950 tonnes of spodumene concentrate, finished loading at the Port of San Pedro in neighbouring Côte d'Ivoire and departed for Hainan province in China on 30 November 2025, marking Bougouni's transition from construction to a revenue-generating mine.
A Chinese-financed Malian mine
Bougouni is majority owned and financed through Kodal Mining UK, a joint venture in which China's Hainan Group holds 51% against Kodal's 49%, under a $117.5m funding package agreed with Hainan Mining and its UK subsidiary Xinmao Investment. As part of finalising the project's mining licence, the State of Mali and national private investors also secured a combined 35% equity stake in the operating company, Lithium Mining Le Bougouni, alongside a $15m cash payment from the joint venture to the Malian state, reflecting the country's post-2023 mining code push for greater local ownership of new resource projects.
Ramping toward steady output
Following the maiden shipment, Kodal continued trucking concentrate to San Pedro to build a stockpile for a second cargo in the first quarter of 2026, and by March 2026 monthly production had climbed to more than 10,900 tonnes at 5.28% Li2O, the highest rate yet recorded at the mine. By the end of the first quarter, cumulative shipments to Hainan had reached roughly 49,000 tonnes across two cargoes.
Why it matters
Bougouni's ramp-up adds Mali to the list of West African countries, alongside Ghana and Zimbabwe, now exporting hard-rock lithium concentrate to Chinese battery supply chains, at a time when lithium prices have been recovering from their 2023-2024 slump. For Kodal, receiving prompt, near-full-value payment on its first shipment offers early validation of the Hainan-backed financing structure, an important signal for other African lithium juniors relying on similar Chinese offtake and equity arrangements to fund development.
The prompt, near-full-value settlement of the first shipment has been cited by other AIM-listed junior miners with Chinese offtake partners as a reassuring precedent, since delayed or disputed payments on maiden shipments have previously undermined confidence in similar financing structures elsewhere on the continent.
