Midnight Sun extends Zambia's Dumbwa copper deposit past 5.3km of strike

Midnight Sun Mining said on 13 May 2026 that its Dumbwa copper deposit, part of the company's Solwezi project in Zambia's Copperbelt, has now been traced along more than 5.3 kilometres of strike length, following more than 200 holes and over 42,000 metres of drilling. The deposit sits in the Domes region of the Zambia-Congo copperbelt, roughly 6km from First Quantum's Kansanshi mine and not far from Barrick's Lumwana operation, putting it in one of the most heavily mined copper corridors on the continent.

Thick zones, high grades

Assay results released so far cover about 4km of the tested strike and include intercepts such as 93 metres at 0.40% copper and 44 metres at 0.53% copper, within a mineralised corridor 200 to 500 metres wide running east-west. Chief operating officer Kevin Bonel said "what began as a geological concept has now been established as a significant discovery," pointing to distinct high-grade blocks the company has named TRS, in the south, and ES, in the north, each running for more than a kilometre and a half of strike.

Why it matters

Zambia's government has set a target of tripling national copper production to 3 million tonnes a year by 2031, and new discoveries close to existing mining infrastructure, like Dumbwa's proximity to Kansanshi and Lumwana, are generally cheaper and faster to bring to account than remote greenfield deposits because power, roads and processing capacity may already exist nearby. For a junior explorer like Midnight Sun, proving up scale quickly is also the clearest way to attract a larger partner or buyer.

What happens next

The company's stated Phase One target is to test a full 11.2km of strike, with roughly 200 further holes and 40,000 additional metres of drilling planned, before moving into a Phase Two campaign testing a copper-in-soil anomaly extending some 20km to the north. No resource estimate timeline has yet been given, meaning the project remains at the discovery and definition stage rather than moving toward development studies.
